A3: Looking back and the way forward

Funny old things, anniversaries. An occasion to both commemorate a journey made together and - one hopes - to reaffirm that commitment. Indeed, the big gemstone corporations romantic types would have us mark the occasion with a blue topaz. But that seems a little gaudy for the PC's premier military experience.

Instead, on the day of its 4th - let's say, rather - birthday, we'd like to cerebrate with an Arma 3 retrospective that broadly charts our adventure thus far, and

BWC: Keeping the Lights On - 2017 edition

The Black Widow Company is a vibrant community and home to at least 500 active members. We maintain game servers for supported companies and regiments and carry the weight of these forums, which are continually updated them to make your experience here better. None of this is free. None of this is cheap. Our expenses top $1,600 a year. We don't charge our members monthly dues or fees and we never will. But once a year, we reach out to you and ask for your help. And guess what?...

BWC NEWS

Ladies and Gentleman of BWC, this upcoming weekend of March 24 - 26th will host the first in a series of One Team, One Fight (OTOF) Weekends to celebrate BWC and the games we play. All of the OTOF awards will be pinned on the weekend, and each gaming division will be holding special events, operations, and tournaments for everyone to participate in! Join us in installing and playing any or all of the games BWC participates in, and having fun with your fellow members.

The OTOF Campaign Weekend (4 total per year) will also have an associated ribbon, which a member can earn by participating in a number of operations/events that occur during the weekend. Receiving the OTOF Campaign Weekend Ribbon is included in the OTOF Campaign Accomplishment list.

Look to OpServ for any operation during the weekend with a [OTOF] title, and you’ll get credit for the weekend. You may sign up for the main event on OPserv HERE.

WHAT IS THE OTOF CAMPAIGN?

The OTOF Campaign is an effort within BWC to provide an incentive and reward to its members to branch out beyond their primary game and play other BWC supported games, as playing new games with new people helps build the BWC team!

The campaign is ran annually and coincides with Veterans Day. The previous year's campaign will end on 10 November and the new year's campaign will start on 11 November. Each year, three levels of OTOF awards can be earned, such as ribbons and badges. Awards will be pinned during Campaign Weekend events, such as this one. OTOF Awards may be earned by completing the OTOF meta-achievement system, which rewards BWC members for taking part in a wide variety of events and operations, as well as accomplishing or earning other certain awards. After a campaign is ended during our final OTOF Celebration, all recurring awards, operation attendance, and other performance-based milestones will also reset at that time.

To view the complete achievement list and for more on this year's OTOF Campaign, please visit the forum thread HERE.

So get ready, because we hope to see you in this Weekend's festivities!

Attention to Orders.

It’s that time of the month again when we recognize the effort put into the Black Widow Company by its members.

New Recruits to BWC are subjected to a mandatory two week trial period so they can test to see if BWC is what they’re looking for and for their C&S to see if they are a good fit. They complete a quick Onboarding to introduce them to how we run things in BWC such as Opserv, a basic training (“BTI”) to teach them how their chosen gaming division works, and one operation where they have the opportunity to join fellow BWC members in a live-fire test of their skills.

During the month of February, 18 recruits fulfilled their requirements and became full members of the Company at the rank of E-2.

[Battle Division]
  • DyingWhisper
  • RazPaz
  • Kavoc
  • Pfubargly
  • Volmar
[Warfare Division]

Congratulations, and we hope you take the next steps towards the NCO ranks!

Speaking of NCOs, TheArticulateGrunt has broken through into the NCO ranks - obtaining the NBR rank of E-5. In addition, USMCogburn has attained the rank of E-6. BWC is unique in that our members have the opportunity, as opposed to many gaming organizations, to advance to permanent positions of authority within our ranks. These members have proven via reputation, deed, and accomplishments to have both the desire and knowledge to help us maintain the standards of fun for all our members. They are the true backbone of who we are. Voted in by current NCOs in a review setting, these folks are the real heart and soul of BWC and we applaud anyone who takes that step.

It is rare that I come across someone that leaves no doubt as to their attitude. Steadfast, loyal to a fault, would drop everything to help out a friend. I’ve never met thearticulategrunt in real life, but I get the distinct impression this is him to his core. In my entire time knowing and working with grunt (as his friends call him), I have never once seen him lose his cool, raise his voice or show an ounce of frustration. I genuinely believe he simply gets on with whatever is thrown at him, good or bad, and deals with it.

thearticulategrunt has been with Black Widow Company now for coming up on 2 years. During this time, he has shown an incredible level of loyalty and dedication to MechWarrior Online, whether that is in Regimental status, Semi-Supported status or as it is now, Battalion (hopefully soon thanks to grunt’s work amongst others, moving back to Regiment!). During this time, grunt has gone above and beyond, pushing the name of BWC out to the MWO community via competitive gameplay and videos showcasing our work on the community’s subreddit and other places. People look for grunt in-game and actually follow his videos for tips to improve themselves as well as the enjoyment they get from his no-frills showing into how to play better.

thearticulategrunt is currently in billet as a MWO Support Team DI, and it is well regarded that he is one of the most prolific motivators when it comes to getting people teamed up, playing together and improving. Previous to the billet, grunt was the MWO recruiter, keeping a steady stream of both new recruits and BWC knowledge out in the field. That being said, grunt did a phenomenal amount of work out of billet as well; keeping operation tempo up, motivation high and not letting the changes that BWC has gone through get to people. His demeanour plays out in everything he does, and I feel that MWO would not be where it is now if thearticulategrunt was not around.
As of writing this, thearticulategrunt has attended over 130 live fire operations, 26 of which he has led himself. He also takes the time to run FTXs, helping to improve our players time and time again. He currently holds an Exemplary Soldier Citation on his jacket: an award not given lightly. This medal is the epitome of how thearticulategrunt operates within BWC, and I foresee great steps into leadership (beyond what he has achieved already) for this man. His attitude, workrate and camaraderie are second to none, and I am honoured to call him a friend as well as work with him in Battle Division.

Jr4life24 and I stand by thearticulategrunt’s nomination for promotion to E-5. I believe he is an outstanding example of how BWC’s NCOs should operate.

USMCogburn has been a BWC member for 4 years now and has held a variety of billets over his time here. After only a month in BWC, Cogburn was billeted to the PS2 Commando Task Force as the 2IC and then later the OIC. Following his transition to ARMA, Cogburn was the Regimental Sergeant Major prior to me taking the role. Certainly they were big shoes to fill.

Cogburn embodies the stereotypical NCO-lifer, or at least the one I have in my head when I think about such things, and I mean that in a good way. He knows when to drop the hammer and when to relax. Cogburn is approachable and congenial in most situations but God help you if you elicit his wrath. Cogburn did a great job maintaining discipline when needed, but did not ever let his billet go to his head. While the internet is serious business as we all know, Cogburn continuously demonstrated his ability to enforce discipline while not alienating people for being too strict. We are all here to have fun after all.

In addition to his billeted roles, Cogburn regularly steps up in leadership roles in operations. Whether platoon leading or squad leading, Cogburn is always willing to fill the command roles and does an excellent job planning as a platoon leader, likely due to his real-world experience in the US Air Force. Time and again Cogburn has demonstrated great skill at command in ARMA, to say nothing of his previous experience in Planetside which I am not familiar enough with to comment on. Whether solely infantry or combined arms, Cogburn regularly demonstrates excellent strategic and tactical ability in keeping everyone moving in the right direction and coordinated, which is no small feat.

USMCogburn has been in BWC forever and despite his current timezone difficulties due to his posting in Germany still gets on Teamspeak when he can to hang out with the regiment. He has even made it to a handful of ops since his move, which is impressive when you consider our ops typically start at 1:30 AM over there. His dedication is commendable and with his real world and in-game experience, Cogburn has clearly exhibited excellent leadership ability and is therefore deserving of a promotion to E-6.

It is always a pleasure to recognize the dedication of members who continually show that they are driven by giving enjoyment to others, and selflessly dedicated to maintaining an aura of fun wherever they might be. We are a community of gamers first and foremost, and there wouldn’t be a community without the efforts of people like these gentlemen. Thank you all for your dedication to the continued excellence of the Black Widow Company, and thank you to everyone else for contributing to this community.
