A3: Looking back and the way forward

Funny old things, anniversaries. An occasion to both commemorate a journey made together and - one hopes - to reaffirm that commitment. Indeed, the big gemstone corporations romantic types would have us mark the occasion with a blue topaz. But that seems a little gaudy for the PC's premier military experience.

Instead, on the day of its 4th - let's say, rather - birthday, we'd like to cerebrate with an Arma 3 retrospective that broadly charts our adventure thus far, and

SIC SEMPER TYRANNIS

1940 CE. The second great war is in full swing, with Germany tangled in a fierce conflict with Soviet Russia and Imperial Japan bogged down in China. Nothing is certain but an endless stream of violence across the majority of the world ... until in December 1941 when Japan launches a bold and daring attack on China’s last remaining territories in an attempt to quickly end the Asian front of the war. The operation fails however for the Japanese, sending the Axis power reeling in retreat.

With China winning the war in Asia, Germany found itself without its most powerful ally and was facing down against the full might of the Soviets. The combination of the harsh winter and seemingly endless waves of Soviet troops slowly but surely stopped the German war machine. After a final push into Berlin by the Red Army, the Third Reich officially capitulated to the Soviets in May 1945. As a result of Russia’s great victory, it annexed the majority of Europe usurping them into the great Soviet Empire.

Fast forward to the current date of June 2nd, 2015. After 70 years of Soviet rule, the people of Europe suffer. They are forced to learn the Cyrillic language and adopt Soviet culture, and are given little leeway in preserving their own national identities and culture. What was once a flourishing continent of international culture and art is now being steeped red in Soviet colours, with statues of Glorious Leader Stalin and Putin erected in every city within the empire. Museums and books have been burnt, and dissenters are being hunted down and executed.

However, even after 70 years, local cultures and traditions still manage to survive despite all odds and the Soviet Empire's best efforts. Many resistance cells that fought the Third Reich never gave up since the end of the second great war. In their eyes they traded one occupying tyrant for another. This one just spoke a different language.

Meanwhile Britain, having never being occupied by Germany in the first place, was for the most part unaffected by this. However, decades of Soviet trade embargos, countless political refugees and increasing international tensions pushed the United Kingdom closer to war. The final straw that broke the camel's back was the discovery of a Soviet plot to force Britain into submission through political subterfuge or otherwise. After 70 years of what was in their eyes watching the world burn and witnessing the Soviet Empire commit cultural genocide, the Britons have had enough. They could no longer sit idly by. It was time.

It was time for Europe to be Europe again.
It was time for Europe to be free again.
It was time to steep Europe in a different kind of red…..once again.
For Queen and Country.
For freedom.
