The Planetside 2 Company
Black Widow Company was founded in February, 2003 by four active-duty military personnel. Specifically they founded the community to play Planetside, a new game that would be released later that year. Playing during the beta period and gaining a reputation for organisation and skillful play.
Planetside was a large scale futuristic FPS game based around a three sided war between the Terran Republic, the official government of earth, the New Conglomerate, a separatist faction attempting to take over earth and, and the Vanu Sovereignty, a group of religious extremists who believe they are receiving commands from a long dead alien civilization. Our fight takes place on Auraxis, a planet discovered by an expedition through a wormhole that collapsed after the first few ships came through. After a few years of war on the planet a new method of cloning adult soldiers has provided each side with a limitless supply of troops though the process is limited by the number of consciousnesses are available for the clones. This technology, in addition to others developed by good old ingenuity and desperation, or by reverse-engineering Vanu artifacts, has led to this war nearly becoming a universal constant. Each faction fights for their own purpose; the New Conglomerate seeks to overthrow the Terran Republic, the Vanu Sovereignty wants all of humanity to bend to the will of Vanu and the Terrain Republic fights to maintain the current government.
BWC would leave Planetside behind in 2007 and move on to other games.
In 2010 Sony Online Entertainment made the announcement they had begun development on Planetside 2 and with the launch of closed Beta in 2012, BWC returned to the war-torn battlefields of Auraxis. Throughout this period BWC updated and added to their doctrines from the original Planetside as beta progressed, continually adapting to the changes throughout beta. The leadership of the outfit also took the time to establish how the community as a whole would play this game. Late in the beta BWC would band together with several other outfits and, in a first for PS2, confine one of the other factions to their Warpgate.
In 2013, SOE called upon players to send ten players from each faction to LA for a live event. The New Conglomerate and Vanu Sovereignty teams had players come from several big-name outfits, the Terran Republic's team was BWC. Later that year, when preparing for the industry wide announcement that PS2 was being ported to the Playstation 4, SOE called upon an outfit from each faction to allow them to film their gameplay and record their chatter. Once again, BWC was called upon and did not disappoint. Fielding nearly THREE HUNDRED players BWC rolled out from the Amerish Warpgate and, while coordinating with other TR forces, lead a charge that conquered the continent over the course of several hours.
Throughout the next few years BWC would be one of the most well known TR outfits, specializing in combined arms and continuing to cooperate with other outfits whenever they were online in force. The NC and VS on the Matheson Server knew for a fact: if BWC showed up, they were in for hard fight. Task forces Dragon and Rampage had some of the best pilots and tankers in the TR; Ranger became feared as BWC's air-assault unit; Widowmaker achieved near impossible objectives and were known for holding of whole platoons, while being just one squad; the Reapers and Havoc harassed and harried the enemy, constantly throwing their opponents off balance; while Venom Battalion formed the frontline that made it all possible.
From late 2015 to 2019, BWC's presence in PS2 declined; members moved on to other games and other outfits. That would change in 2020; with Daybreak Games (formally SOE) developing new content for PS2. Former BWC members returned to the outfit, new people started playing and in the summer of that year, BWC summoned its first Bastion Fleet Carrier to announce that it had returned to Auraxis. BWC had come home to its roots.
